On the Comedy Channel around Two and a Half Men, guess what advert appeared on my television screen, the famous Milky Way cars advert which according to my sources was first aired on UKTV in 1989. Being 4 years old at the time, I will admit that I was a car fanatic, the advert never failed to make me smile, although my obsession for cars ended in 1996. The advert is becoming popular, which pleases me because more advertising execs will put this into consideration and bring back more retro and well loved adverts from yesteryear.
In relevance with the christmas spirit, the famous coca cola trucks advert made it debut on British screens after 9 years, which with the help of a large facebook group, was revived. It’s so nice to hear ‘holidays are coming, holidays are coming’ as this was the song you heard every christmas when you were a kid, making you feel that nothing is too old, if it was popular then, then it should very well be of some popularity now.
One of the main problems with advertising currently is that it seems to dumb itself down for the sake of the young people’s attention. The ghastly T-Mobile bring people together advert was surely aimed at the young, but at what cost, singing badly is supposed to be ‘cool’ (I’m sorry, it’s been long since my teenagehood
), the young seem to have no acknowledgement of how todays advertising differentiates with advertising from 20, 10 years ago, but I will say that I don’t agree that a particular advert should be shown constantly. If the same advert is shown time after time, it will lose it’s spark among the audience, they will get tired of it. It’s nice to show some creativity with a new, fresh out of the bag advert and to show the popular retro adverts in 3 years time or so.
Of course, there are many more retro advertisements that still need to make a comeback onto our screens, maybe with the help of a facebook group, we may be able to achieve this.
