Bringing old advertising back, popular move advertisers!

September 11, 2010

On the Comedy Channel around Two and a Half Men, guess what advert appeared on my television screen, the famous Milky Way cars advert which according to my sources was first aired on UKTV in 1989. Being 4 years old at the time, I will admit that I was a car fanatic, the advert never failed to make me smile, although my obsession for cars ended in 1996. The advert is becoming popular, which pleases me because more advertising execs will put this into consideration and bring back more retro and well loved adverts from yesteryear.

In relevance with the christmas spirit, the famous coca cola trucks advert made it debut on British screens after 9 years, which with the help of a large facebook group, was revived. It’s so nice to hear ‘holidays are coming, holidays are coming’ as this was the song you heard every christmas when you were a kid, making you feel that nothing is too old, if it was popular then, then it should very well be of some popularity now.

One of the main problems with advertising currently is that it seems to dumb itself down for the sake of the young people’s attention. The ghastly T-Mobile bring people together advert was surely aimed at the young, but at what cost, singing badly is supposed to be ‘cool’ (I’m sorry, it’s been long since my teenagehood :) ),  the young seem to have no acknowledgement of how todays advertising differentiates with advertising from 20, 10 years ago, but I will say that I don’t agree that a particular advert should be shown constantly. If the same advert is shown time after time, it will lose it’s spark among the audience, they will get tired of it. It’s nice to show some creativity with a new, fresh out of the bag advert and to show the popular retro adverts in 3 years time or so.

Of course, there are many more retro advertisements that still need to make a comeback onto our screens, maybe with the help of a facebook group, we may be able to achieve this. ;)

Where did Lady Gaga inherit her newfound style from?

December 15, 2009

While browsing through the Sun newspaper, I stumbled across a image of Lady Gaga wearing a rather….surreal outfit. A PVC beefeater outfit with diamond encrested blood red eyeshadow. This left me wondering where she developed this look from. Bored of thinking, I switched on a episode of Gimme Gimme Gimme (you know, the episode where Tom portrays the role of a Lollipop Man in a Japanese play set in a converted fire station!). In that episode, James Dreyfus shown this technique where you add red eye shadow all over your eyes to apparently ‘draw people to your eyes.’ So I presume Miss Gaga copied this style, with the same results as it turned out at the end of that particular episode!

What is Gimme Gimme Gimme?

Gimme Gimme Gimme was a British sitcom created from the mind of Johnathan Harvey and produced by Tiger Aspect productions (the same company who produced Mr Bean). The series hit our tv screens on the 8th January 1999 and lasted until December 2001. The series itself is an underrated classic. Both James Dreyfus and Kathy Burke peforming the role of ‘frenemies’ Tom and Linda respectively with great chemistry.

The series revolves two loners of love, Tom Farrell (portrayed by James Dreyfus, who took over the role of Ardal ‘O Hanlon in the comedy series My Hero, which I may add is a role I’d rather forget.) The openly gay ‘actor’ who is unsuccessful when it comes to tv appearances and throughout the series, always deludes himself that he is a fantastic actor whereas infact, he is absolutely dreadful!!! Even considering a small role at the back of a queue in Daylight Robbery a good performance and imitates Bianca from Eastenders in front of Patsy Palmer herself!! With nasty results.

Linda La Hughes is a repulsive, self-delusional, borderline retarded redhead portrayed by Kathy Burke (Harry Enfield and Chum’s Wynetta Slob) who considers herself to be in the same league as Catherine Zeta Jones, Courtney Cox and Liz Hurley, whereas infact in the words of Sue ‘looks like Eddie Eagle Edwards in a sports bra.’ She considers herself to be a figure of temptation among the opposite sex, even when they wake up screaming with sheer regret. She thinks of her family life as normal whereas infact, it was utterly traumatic. Mentioning that her father tied her to the roof of his car saying ‘you make me physically sick!’, laughing when she was given a pencil sharpener as a christmas present and even going as far for his hatred for her pretending to be situated in an iron lung which Linda is oblivious to the fact that he gave her a picture of a sideboard with a carriage clock on top.  However, Linda still thinks that her dad loved her dearly. And about her mother, she was close to her mother, but she eventually collapsed in a paddling pool in Pinner.

Tom and Linda’s relationship grows throughout the series, Linda apparently has feelings for Tom but put off by the fact that he is gay. Tom constantly pokes fun of Linda whenever he grasps the opportunity, Linda doing the same, at times even beating each other up. Apart from this, Tom and Linda are best friends. Living in their small flat with resident weirdos Jez and Sue, who like to live a very alternative lifestyle (when I say alternative, I mean not normal). And their landlady Beryl, ex-prostitute, who still doesn’t hesitate to get up to her old tricks.

This series is an underrated comedy gem to watch, James and Kathy are very convincing in their roles as Tom and Linda. The series as an whole can be bought on amazon.co.uk for an astonishing £7.00!!!! Todays prices. :)
